At the side meeting of the SADC People's Summit, marginalized and disadvantaged groups are uniting to address the unfair tax collection systems that disproportionately impact SADC countries. Among the participating civil society organizations, our organization Khathang Tema Lesotho Federation of Informal Traders Associations (Khathang Tema- LEFITA) represented informal economy workers across the StreetNet International Region of East and Southern Africa. The organisation serves as the voice for Lesotho’s street vendors, championing their rights within the informal economy for decades. Since the late nineties, we have fought for the equitable distribution of Lesotho's natural resources, particularly from the perspective of street vending and access to public spaces. Natural Resource Governance must be a priority for national discussions. It's imperative that these issues are addressed and resolved by our country organizations. The shrinking civic space is a growing concern, with municipalities prioritizing the eviction of informal workers over collaborative urban planning with informal economy associations for sustainable city development. Moreover, the national tax allocation system urgently requires review, with meaningful public participation to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
